Learning To Take Time for Yourself

Anytime I talk to a mom who is feeling overwhelmed or drained, the first thing I ask is, “Do you take time for yourself every day?”

Most moms will answer “no.”

There’s a stigma out there that if you’re a stay-at-home mom then it means that your job is to focus literally all of your energy on your family and household and if you take even 1% of your energy and focus it on yourself, you’re considered selfish.

Now I want you to hear me so come closer. Get reeeeeal close to your computer or phone screen.

YOU ARE NOT SELFISH FOR TAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF.

I am going to repeat myself.

YOU ARE NOT SELFISH FOR TAKING TIME FOR YOURSELF.

Can you tell I’m pretty serious about this?! (Tweet about it!)

One of the only reasons that I can get through the really crazy days with the boys is because I make it a priority to take a little bit of time for myself each and every day.

The most regular way that I take some time for self-care is in the mornings when I’m getting ready for the day. I put on clean clothes and do my hair and put on some make up every day, even when we aren’t leaving the house. It makes me feel like part of the world and gives me a little boost of confidence and I just enjoy playing with make up.

I manage to do this most days by putting Netflix on the iPad for my two-year-old and putting him in his room. He’s content in there as long as Netflix doesn’t accidently get paused and I can watch/listen to him over the video monitor. The baby is still little enough that he’s content just hanging out in my room while I sit at my desk/vanity to do my hair and makeup. Although he is almost crawling so soon I’ll have to set up the pack ‘n play since there are stairs in our room.

Taking time like this in the morning is the best way to start my day. Some days the boys will fuss and be clingy and it makes getting ready all the more difficult but I still manage to get my hair and makeup done. Starting my day with me-time puts me in a good place to start tackling the day.

Do you feel selfish for taking time for yourself? Has it been so long since you’ve had some self-care time that you don’t even know what to do anymore?
